Toyota South Africa chooses Lloyds Somers Coil Lifters.

Lloyds Somers have won a contract to supply their latest design of “coil friendly” Telescopic Coil Lifters to Toyota in South Africa.

Morris Cranes (Lloyds Somers authorised distributor in South Africa) won the business against strong competition from Japanese manufacturers. The Somers product being chosen due to its proven coil damage prevention features.

Somers ”coil friendly” Lifters are now in place at Toyota South Africa, Toyota France, Toyota U.K. The product has become an important part of the coil handling process worldwide wherever coil damage prevention is paramount.



Flue Wall Lifter for Anglesey Aluminium

Lloyds Somers have recently designed and manufactured a “Flue Wall Grab” for Anglesey Aluminium, which provides a safe and efficient way to remove old flue walls and replace with new. The grab eradicates the need for personnel to be positioned in hazardous areas and environments during the refurbishment of baking pits.

Use of the grab enabled the company to complete the flue wall replacement programme within a particularly tight deadline. During one meeting with the client Lloyds Somers were informed, “The Flue Wall Replacement Project has been scheduled around the time savings which will be gained by utilising this bespoke designed grab”. No pressure then!



Billet Handling at Sandvik, Sweden.

A bespoke Multiple Billet Lifter has been designed and manufactured by Lloyds Somers for use at Sandvik’s new billet production facility in Sandviken.

The lifting legs rotate through 90o to collect or offload the billets.

A single actuator is mechanically linked to each of the lifting legs to provide a positive and repeatable motion whilst minimising any maintenance requirements. Each leg is electrically monitored to ensure safe operation the lifter.

The lifter is suitable for handling round, square or irregular shaped billets of varying length.

The lifter negates the need to manually sling the billets and therefore removes any potential for operator injury during the handling process.



Headroom a problem?

With increasing coil sizes, headroom availability in existing premises can be a problem.

Lloyds Somers have developed a “reeved in” coil lifter which will give additional clearance for Coil Stockholders and Processors.

The lifters can be supplied with built in ancillary lifting hooks or a lifting beam to ensure the crane can be used for normal slinging purposes as and when required.



Somers Slab Tongs to India.

Due to the reputation and longevity of Somers Slab Tongs, a number of new tongs have been ordered and supplied into the booming Indian Steel Market.

SAIL (Steel Authority of India Ltd) have ordered a 30 Tonne Motorised Quadruplex Tong with Slew (shown above) for their Rourkela Plant plus 110 Tonne and 40 Tonne Duplex Slab Tongs for their Bokaro Steel Plant.

HEC (Heavy Engineering Corporation) of Ranchi have ordered a 46 Tonne Motorised Slab Tong for use with one of their E.O.T.C’s with a final destination at Bhilai Steel Plant which is scheduled for shipment from the UK in July.

Lloyds Somers, have also been awarded an order to supply ESSAR Steel of Mumbai with an 85 Tonne Motorised Duplex Slab Tong with a quick change over facility as part of their expansion plans.



Corus choose Lloyds Somers Telescopic Coil Lifters over Magnets.

Lloyds Somers have recently supplied a Telescopic Coil Lifter to Corus Panels and Profiles as a replacement handling device to a Coil Magnet.

Panels and Profiles had experienced some problems with the magnet (whys, wherefores and reasons unknown) but have taken the advice from Corus’s Main Mills and invested in a “coil friendly” Somers Lifter.

The anti coil damage features originally evolved through requirements specified from within the Corus Group (previously British Steel) and have been developed and perfected over many years into the proven product that is available today.
